Can't Open HEIC? Complete Troubleshooting Guide

Common HEIC File Problems

HEIC is a powerful image format, but its limited compatibility causes real headaches for millions of users every day. If you're dealing with a HEIC file that won't cooperate, you're not alone. Below are the most common problems and exactly how to fix each one.

"Format Not Supported" or "Can't Open This File"

This is the most frequent HEIC issue, especially on Windows. You receive a photo, double-click it, and your computer tells you it doesn't recognize the format.

Why it happens: Your operating system or application lacks the HEVC codec needed to decode HEIC files. Windows doesn't include it by default, and many third-party programs don't support the format either.

How to fix it:

  • On Windows 10/11: Install the "HEIF Image Extensions" (free) and "HEVC Video Extensions" (paid, around $0.99) from the Microsoft Store. Restart your PC, and the Photos app should open HEIC files.
  • On Mac: Make sure you're running macOS High Sierra (10.13) or later. If you are and files still won't open, check for pending system updates.
  • On any device: Convert the HEIC file to JPG using our free browser-based converter. This bypasses all codec issues entirely.

HEIC Files Won't Upload to a Website

Many websites, online forms, job applications, and content management systems only accept JPG or PNG. When you try to upload a HEIC file, you get an error like "unsupported file type" or "please upload a JPG or PNG."

How to fix it:

  1. Visit our HEIC2PIC in your browser.
  2. Drop your HEIC files into the converter.
  3. Choose JPG as the output format.
  4. Download the converted file and upload it to the website.

This works for social media platforms, government portals, e-commerce sites, job application forms, and any other service that rejects HEIC uploads.

Can't Email HEIC Photos

Emailing HEIC files often leads to problems. The recipient may not be able to open the attachment, or their email client may not show a preview. Some corporate email systems strip HEIC attachments entirely because they don't recognize the file type.

How to fix it:

  • Before sending: Convert your HEIC photos to JPG first. This ensures the recipient can view them regardless of their device or email client.
  • On iPhone: You can change how iOS handles photos sent via email. Go to Settings > Camera > Formats and select "Most Compatible." This saves new photos as JPG instead of HEIC. For existing HEIC photos, converting them before attaching remains the most reliable method.

HEIC Thumbnails Not Showing on Windows

Even after installing the Microsoft HEIF extensions, some users find that HEIC thumbnails don't appear in File Explorer. Folders full of HEIC files show generic white icons instead of photo previews.

How to fix it:

  • Rebuild the thumbnail cache: Open Disk Cleanup, select "Thumbnails," and clean. Restart Explorer or your PC.
  • Check both extensions: You need both "HEIF Image Extensions" and "HEVC Video Extensions" installed. Missing either one can prevent thumbnails from generating.
  • Verify File Explorer settings: Make sure thumbnail previews are enabled in Folder Options. Open File Explorer, go to View > Options, and confirm that "Always show icons, never thumbnails" is unchecked.

HEIC Files Appear Corrupted or Won't Convert

Occasionally a HEIC file appears damaged or refuses to convert in desktop software. Before assuming the file is lost, try these steps:

  • Check the file extension. Some files are actually .heif rather than .heic. Rename the extension and try again.
  • Try a different tool. Desktop converters sometimes fail with certain HEIC variants. A browser-based converter like ours uses a different decoding approach and may succeed where other tools fail.
  • Re-download the file. If the file was transferred via email or messaging app, it may have been truncated during transfer. Request the original file or download it again from iCloud or the original source.

The Universal Solution

While each problem above has specific fixes, there's one method that resolves nearly all HEIC compatibility issues in one step: convert to JPG. A JPG file works on every device, in every app, on every website, and in every email client.

Our free HEIC2PIC makes this effortless. It runs in your browser, works on any operating system, handles batch conversions, and keeps your photos private since nothing is uploaded to a server. Whenever HEIC gives you trouble, converting to JPG is the fastest path to a solution.
